IIME 371: The Beta Block-Hessler Project (100/21277)

The Beta Block-Hessler Street project is focused on a CWRU program to run fiber optic wiring into each apartment and home on Hessler Street. This connectivity will not only provide free internet access, but also offer a series of free web and media services; including cable television, public safety cams, smart grid energy monitoring and several kinds of local health services. This interdisciplinary course will study the usage patterns and behavior of the residents of Hessler Street who will be enabled by fiber optic connectivity provided to them by CWRU. The class will provide and coordinate web services and social networking via free dashboard software to all participants in the program and produce compelling content relevant to Cleveland and Hessler Street in particular. In addition the class will provide various forms of 'start pages' for users to choose from and gateway to several partner web services to provide multiple solutions and end-user experiences. The course will provide and coordinate three different start page solutions; a) one very very simple and non-customizable, b) the second an average, regular kind of interface (with minimal customization) and c) an advanced, highly customizable user interface approach. Built-in blogging, social networking, activity streams, RSS feeds, news page, communication and multimedia software will be provided to all residents via these start page interfaces.

An integrated approach to the teaching of the complex relationship of customer to designer and to manufacturer, this course will be team taught by faculty from WSOM and CSE, with participation of corporate representatives sponsoring projects for the teams. The course will be built on a series of projects, each emphasizing different aspects of the product/process design experience, selected to provide exposure to a wide variety of entrepreneurial activities. The project activities are expected to promote the development of realistic activities of cross-functional teams. Recommended preparation: IIME 430A.

IIME 435: Design for Manufacturing and Manufacturing Management (100/11183)

This course introduces concepts for helping make designs more manufacturable and for making the manufacturing process more successful through better planning and control. It is related to the product and process design course, in that it picks up where that course stops. We study how to plan and control the manufacturing process, given the design for manufacturing. The course will include quantitative analysis for cases that will be performed on microcomputer software.
