Topic: The Science & Politics of Musical Experience. This course explores the science and politics of musical experience, looking closely at key historical moments from antiquity to the internet age. For millennia, music has played an important role in ongoing debates about the relationship of mind and body, and our relationship to the divine, the natural world, and society. This course will cover how ideas about listening and performance have changed over time, and students will develop new frameworks for thinking critically about how, and why, we listen to music today.

Course is open to music majors, minors, and non-majors with sufficient musical background. Emphasis on group work, creativity, and imagination. All work done on Macintosh computers in The Core, the Department of Music's multimedia classroom.
